Wow that is a huge quake. Amazing only 2 reported deaths so far. Tell Duck to stay safe down there!

it was about 500 k's from where I live, on a minor fault line....but still enuf to shake the house.....

where I live, the major pacific plate fault line runs about 100 meters from my house... so if the earthquake was centered here, it would have been a lot worse....

worse part of it was my cat decided to * hide * under the covers of my bed, head first, butt out..... thank god she never farted

...so life goes on in the great pacific rim of fire; one of those quirks to accept in order to enjoy the beauty of the lands that encircle the great pacific.

very glad to hear that all is well with everyone!

Some more pics. They had another quake about a 5.1 and have had over 20 aftershocks. Major structural damage, a lot of buildings condemned.

We have injuries reported not deaths. Hope all continues well LDD.

The Tonga - Kermadec - Hikurangi subductions are not piffle. They cause some of the deepest trenches known and the area is actively volcanic.

Is there still an intention to link north and south islands with a tunnel?

nope hep.... cos they would have to run across a fault line in the middle of the strait between the two islands, and the risks are too great.... plus the depth that they would have to drill and carve out for a tunnel ...I think its 1 1/2 -2 miles deep in order to go under the sea bed

we have cable ( power and phone etc) connections between the two islands but its a floating cable, its not anchored to the sea bed

south islanders tend to have the attitude of the north island is full of assholes so we should cut the bastards off and let the island sink...lol..... and while its island rivallery.... even overseas visitors has stated many times, that a south islander will give you the shirt off their back, but a north islander will take your shirt, wallet and car plus punch you in the head for not dropping the stuff off at their house, and forcing them to have to come to you and rob you lol

Glad LDD's ok, but the country looks like a war zone.

Looks like there's a lot of work to be done.

Cat,

You may be thinking of Gleeky and Tiga. And I am not sure how far from LDD they are. But prayers to all in NZ as the deal with this latest burp from Mother Earth

My thoughts and prayers are to the people of NZ. and I am glad you are safe LDD.

(Edit) I just went and saw pictures off yahoo news and damn it looks like the land has been reshaped. Parts lifted, other sunk, cracks running scarily through the roads and lands. So tragic.. Thankfully not much casualties.

As I understand it Tiga and Gleeky are on North Island. The city hit the hardest by the quake, Christchurch, is a four hour bus ride to where Duck lives and they felt the big one there but not the smaller 5.something. The pictures are horrendous and they were very lucky that at the time the quake struck there weren't a lot of commuters out and about. The low casualty rate is amazing but what remains to be seen is the cost of the cleanup. Some houses have a crack running through them now and are condemned. Businesses are being looted and people are just showing the best and the worst of humanity in a time of crisis.
